Reflections of a Scottish Landscape Photographer: Just A Pack Guest Blog

A couple of months ago I had the pleasure of a chance virtual encounter on Twitter with Just A Pack; two friends from New York who have been travelling around Europe, Asia and Central America since February 2014. When Michael and Randi invited me to write a guest blog on the beauty of Scotland, I simply couldn’t refuse. I thoroughly enjoyed reflecting on the many reasons why I love landscape photography in Scotland, from memories of childhood holidays in the Highlands; to the ever-changing seasons, weather and light; and the sheer pleasure of exploring the great outdoors both on and off the tourist trail. I’m delighted to see my images of Scotland on the Just A Pack website, rubbing shoulders with beautiful destinations from all over the world!

Check out the Just A Pack website for my guest blog, Reflections of a Scottish Landscape Photographer, and for some top tips on inspiring, affordable and responsible travel.

  1. Stunning photo from Strath Suardal, Karen, I love the way you managed to catch the mist in the distance 🙂
And a great guest post with yet more beautiful photos, I love the photo of your bike and Black Isle in the background, it just looks so idyllic 🙂

    1. Thank you, Andy. The Strath Suardal image is one of my favourites. I shot it in April 2011 on the morning of the Royal Wedding, towards the end of a week long solo holiday on Skye. I captured the Beinn na Caillich photograph (the second image in the guest blog) then descended into the strath and was blown away by these stunning reflections as the sun came up and burned off the last of the mist. It was one of my best ever mornings for landscape photography!

I’m glad you enjoyed the guest blog! I certainly had fun writing it, re-visiting lots of favourite photos and recalling special memories. I’m fond of that photograph of my bike too. I love exploring the minor roads and tracks around here and am looking forward to a few more cycling adventures this year come the longer days and better weather. That picture was actually shot with a compact camera, which just goes to show that you don’t always need the best equipment to capture a good shot! 🙂

      1. It seems that you had a wonderful holiday on Skye 🙂 It’s great when everything just seems to click into place, you get perfect weather to go with excellent scenery and you’re at the right place at the right time, whereas there are those other times where you know there should be a good photo or two, but nothing seems quite right 🙁
Like you Karen, I’m looking forward to Spring so I can get out and about more often, using a bike is a wonderful way of exploring new places, and compact cameras are so good these days, you can often take some amazing photos with them 🙂

        1. That’s very true! It’s often hit or miss but those frustrating times all seem worthwhile when it all comes together and you manage to capture something special.

It’s cold but sunny up here today and I’ve just been for a lovely lunchtime walk in the woods with my camera. It’s starting to feel like we’re getting through the winter now and there will be more days like this to look forward to! 🙂

      1. Most welcome. That’s the latest we could do..keep spreading positive vibes and your work deserve it..I wil surely go through all and post my views whenever I could. keep clicking 🙂

    1. Thank you Seonaid. I reckon most people whiz past this spot en route to Elgol and the picture postcard views across Loch Slapin and Loch Scavaig but it is well worth pausing here, particularly on a morning like this when the reflections were out of this world!
